The openSIS application form builder provides two workflow options that determine how a submitted form is handled:
These options should be configured according to the purpose of the form. Direct enrollment is intended for forms that can create an enrolled student without a standard admissions review, while secondary-form linking is intended for supplemental forms that belong to an existing application.
The enrollment and linking options appear near the top of the application form builder.
Navigation: Admissions > Application Forms > Form Name
When Allow Direct Enrollment is enabled, an applicant is enrolled as a student after successfully completing and submitting the application form.
This option bypasses the regular application-review workflow. The submitted application does not need to move manually through statuses such as Applied, Provisionally Accepted, Accepted, Waitlisted, or Enrolled before the student record is created.
Direct enrollment may be useful when:
Direct enrollment should not be enabled merely to shorten the admissions process. The institution should first confirm that the form collects all information needed to create a valid student record.
After direct enrollment is enabled, the Application Forms list displays Yes in the Allow Direct Enrollment column for that form.
If the option is turned off, the column displays No, and submitted applications follow the institution’s regular admissions-processing workflow.
Before activating this option, verify that the form collects the information required by the institution, such as:
Also confirm that conditional logic does not unintentionally hide a required field from an applicant.
Important: Direct enrollment changes how submitted applications enter openSIS. Enable it only when every successful form submission should result in student enrollment.
If applications must be reviewed before enrollment:
Future submissions will follow the standard applicant workflow according to the updated configuration. Review existing submitted applications separately because changing the setting does not necessarily change records that were already processed.
The Link this as a secondary form to an existing application option is used when a form should supplement a primary application instead of creating an independent application.
A secondary form may be appropriate when an applicant must submit additional information after completing an initial application. Examples include:
Linking the form keeps the supplemental submission connected to the applicant’s existing application.
The primary form should already exist before the secondary form is linked to it.
Only use secondary-form linking when the supplemental information should belong to an existing application. If the form must create an independent application, leave this option turned off.
Before linking forms, decide which information belongs in each one.
The primary application should generally collect the applicant’s core information, such as:
The secondary form should collect only the additional information needed for a specific purpose. Avoid unnecessarily repeating the same fields in both forms.
Using separate forms can make a long admissions process easier to manage, particularly when some information is required only for selected applicants or programs.
After configuring the secondary form:
Do not distribute the secondary form until the complete linked workflow has been verified.
Use Allow Direct Enrollment when a successful submission should create an enrolled student without manual admissions processing.
Use Link this as a secondary form to an existing application when the form collects supplemental information for an application that already exists.
Leave both options off when the form should create a new application that admissions staff will review and process manually.
Note: The available settings and results may depend on the form configuration, institutional workflow, and user permissions.
