How to Create Block or Rotation Days in openSIS

Overview

Block or Rotation Days in openSIS allow institutions to configure alternate scheduling structures where periods may vary depending on the day.

This feature is commonly used in:

  • Higher education institutions
  • A/B day schedules
  • Odd/Even rotation models
  • Block scheduling systems
  • Specialized academic calendars

Administrators can create multiple rotation days and configure separate periods under each day.


Accessing Block or Rotation Day Settings

To access this feature:

Settings > School Settings > Periods

Click:
Add Block/Rotation Day

The Block/Rotation Day panel appears on the left side of the screen.


Why Use Block or Rotation Days

Rotation scheduling helps institutions:

  • Organize alternate schedules
  • Reduce repetitive class patterns
  • Manage lab or elective rotations
  • Support flexible instructional structures
  • Create different daily period configurations

Adding a Block or Rotation Day

To create a new Block/Rotation Day:

  1. Navigate to:
    Info
    Settings > School Settings > Periods
  2. Click:
    Add Block/Rotation Day
  3. Enter:
    • Title
    • Sort Order
  4. Click Submit

The newly created rotation day will appear in the Block/Rotation Day listing.


Fields Explained

Title

The name of the block or rotation day.

Examples:

  • Day A
  • Day B
  • Rotation 1
  • Odd Day
  • Even Day

Sort Order

Defines the sequence in which the rotation day appears within the system.

This helps maintain consistent schedule organization.


Managing Rotation Days

Administrators can:

  • Edit existing rotation days
  • Delete rotation days
  • Switch between rotation days
  • Configure separate periods under each day

The selected rotation day determines which periods are displayed and managed.


Adding Periods Under Rotation Days

Once a Block/Rotation Day is created:

  • Select the desired rotation day from the left panel
  • Click Add New Period
  • Configure the periods specific to that rotation schedule

Each rotation day can maintain its own unique period structure.


Attendance and Rotation Days

Attendance calculations continue to work normally with rotation schedules.

Periods configured with:

  • Calculate Attendance = Enabled

will contribute toward daily attendance minute calculations.

  • Period 4

  • Period 6

This structure helps institutions alternate schedules efficiently.

  • Use clear naming conventions for rotation days.
