How to Manage Gender Values in openSIS

Overview

openSIS allows schools to manage Gender values through the List of Values configuration.
These values are used across the system in student and staff profiles, reports, dashboards, and analytics.

Administrators can:

  • View default gender options

  • Add new gender values

  • Edit existing gender values

  • Control the display order of gender options


Who Can Manage Gender Values?

  • School Administrators only

This setting is not available to teachers, students, or parents.

Default Gender Values

By default, openSIS includes commonly used gender options such as:

  • Male

  • Female

  • Transgender

  • Non-binary

  • Other

These defaults help schools get started quickly and can be customized as needed.

How to Add a New Gender

  1. Navigate to Settings → List of Values → Gender.

  2. Click the Add Gender button.

  3. Enter the gender name in the Title field.

  4. Click Submit to save.

How to Edit an Existing Gender

  1. Locate the gender you want to update.

  2. Click the Edit (✏️) icon.

  3. Update the Title as required.

  4. Click Update to save changes.

Reordering Gender Values

  • Use the drag-and-drop handle in the Sort column to change the display order.

  • The order defined here controls how gender options appear in dropdowns throughout the system.


Where Are Gender Values Used?

Configured gender values appear in:

  • Student profiles

  • Staff profiles

  • Admission forms

  • Reports and exports

  • Dashboard analytics (e.g., Students by Gender dashlet)

Alert
Changes apply system-wide for the selected school.


Important Notes

  • Deleting a gender value may affect existing records using that value.

  • Editing a gender title updates how it appears across the system.

  • Gender values are school-specific, not global across tenants.


Best Practice Recommendations

  • Keep gender options inclusive and aligned with institutional policies.

  • Avoid deleting gender values already in use.

  • Review values before the start of a new academic year.
