Manage Behavior & Discipline (Referrals) in openSIS

Overview

The Behavior & Discipline (Referrals) module allows teachers to record, track, and manage student behavior incidents.

Teachers can:

  • Create new referrals
  • View referrals related to them
  • Edit and update referrals
  • Add comments and track actions
  • Close referrals after resolution

How to Access

Go to:
Behavior & Discipline → Referrals


Referral List View

This screen shows all referrals associated with the logged-in teacher.

A teacher will see referrals where:

  • They are the reporting staff, OR
  • They are assigned to the referral

Columns Explained

  • Date of Incident → When incident occurred
  • Referral ID → Unique identifier
  • Possible Motivation → Reason behind behavior
  • Problem Behavior (Major/Minor) → Categorized behavior
  • Student(s) Involved → Affected students
  • Reporting Staff → Who created the referral
  • Assigned To → Staff responsible for handling

Filters & Controls


Marking Period

  • Filter referrals by marking period
  • Example: Quarter, Semester

  • Search referrals quickly

  • Apply detailed filters

Open / Closed Toggle

  • Open → Active referrals
  • Closed → Resolved referrals

Tags Filter

  • Filter referrals using tags
  • Helps categorize incidents

Clear

  • Resets all filters

Export to Excel

  • Download referral data

Add New

  • Create a new referral

Witnesses

  • Add staff who witnessed the incident

Date of Incident *

Possible Motivation *

  • Select reason (e.g., Disruption, Peer pressure)

Location *

  • Where incident occurred

Problem Behaviors

Major Behavior

  • Serious issues (e.g., bullying, cheating)

Minor Behavior

  • Less severe issues (e.g., talking, not following rules)

Details of Incident

  • Enter full description
  • Rich text editor available

Assigned To

  • Staff responsible for handling the case

Reporting Staff *

  • Person reporting the incident

Tags

  • Categorize referral

Administrative Decision

  • Action taken (if applicable)

Save Referral

  • Submit form to create referral
  • Referral appears in list view

View Referral Details


Information Displayed

  • Students involved
  • Incident details
  • Behavior categories
  • Location, time, motivation
  • Assigned staff
  • Reporting staff

Activity Timeline

  • Shows:
    • Referral creation
    • Assignments
    • Updates

Comments Section

  • Add comments for:

Actions on Referral


Edit

  • Modify referral details

Assign / Reassign

  • Change responsible staff

Print

  • Print referral

Close Referral

  • Marks referral as resolved
  • Moves it to Closed section

Important Notes

  • Teachers only see referrals:
    • Assigned to them
    • Or created by them
  • Some fields may be:
    • Configured by admin
    • Required based on setup

Limitations

  • Cannot see all school referrals (role-based access)
  • Cannot modify admin-level configurations
  • Behavior categories depend on system setup

  • Provide detailed incident descriptions
  • Assign referrals promptly
  • Use tags for easy tracking
  • Close referrals after resolution
  • Add comments for transparency
