Manage Referral Tags in openSIS Behavior & Discipline

Manage Referral Tags

Overview

Referral Tags help schools categorize and prioritize student behavior referrals. Tags can be used to identify referrals that require immediate attention, follow-up, or any other custom classification defined by the school.

By assigning tags, administrators and staff can quickly organize referrals, simplify searches, and improve incident tracking throughout the disciplinary process.

Apply Tags to a Referral

Tags can be assigned while creating a new referral or when editing an existing one.

To apply tags:

  1. Open an existing referral or create a new referral.
  2. Locate the Tags section on the right panel.
  3. Click the Settings (⚙️) icon.
  4. The Apply Tags to this Referral panel opens.
  5. Search for a tag or browse the available list.
  6. Click the Add (+) icon beside the desired tag.
  7. Repeat the process if multiple tags are required.

The selected tags are immediately associated with the referral.

Search Available Tags

If your school has many tags configured, use the Search field to quickly locate a specific tag.

Simply begin typing the tag name, and matching results will appear automatically.

Remove a Tag from a Referral

To remove an assigned tag:

  1. Open the referral.
  2. Navigate to the Tags section.
  3. Open the tag selection panel.
  4. Remove the tag from the referral.

The referral is updated immediately after the tag is removed.

Create or Edit Tags

Schools can create custom referral tags that match their internal behavior management process.

To manage tags:

  1. Open the Tags panel.
  2. Click Add / Edit Tags.
  3. The Tags management window opens.

From this window, you can:

  • Create a new tag
  • Edit an existing tag
  • Delete unused tags

Create a New Tag

To create a tag:

  1. Click Add New Tag.
  2. Select a color for the tag.
  3. Enter a descriptive tag name.
  4. Save the tag.

The new tag becomes available for all future referrals.

Edit an Existing Tag

To modify an existing tag:

  1. Open the Tags management window.
  2. Click the Edit icon beside the tag.
  3. Update the tag name or color.
  4. Save your changes.

All future referrals will display the updated tag information.

Delete a Tag

If a tag is no longer needed:

  1. Open the Tags management window.
  2. Click the Delete icon beside the tag.
  3. Confirm the deletion.

Note: Deleting a tag removes it from the available tag list. Consider reviewing existing referrals before deleting tags that may already be in use.

Use Color-Coded Tags

Each tag can be assigned a unique color to improve visibility.

For example:

  • Red – Urgent
  • Yellow – Medium Priority
  • Blue – Follow-up
  • Green – Informational

Schools may define their own color conventions based on internal policies.

Best Practices

  • Use consistent tag names across the school.
  • Reserve high-priority tags for incidents requiring immediate attention.
  • Keep the tag list concise and meaningful.
  • Periodically review and remove outdated or unused tags.
  • Establish color conventions so staff can quickly recognize referral priorities.
