Overview
openSIS automatically calculates each student's Daily Attendance based on the attendance recorded for their scheduled class periods and the attendance thresholds configured by the school. If attendance-related configurations change after attendance has already been recorded, previously calculated daily attendance may no longer be accurate.
The Recalculate Daily Attendance feature enables administrators to recalculate attendance for a selected date range, ensuring that all daily attendance records reflect the latest attendance rules and schedule configuration.
Why Recalculate Daily Attendance?
Daily attendance is calculated using:
-
The attendance recorded for each scheduled class period.
-
The instructional minutes assigned to each period.
-
The Full Day Minutes configured in Settings > School > Periods.
-
The Half Day Minutes configured in Settings > School > Periods.
If any of these values change after attendance has been taken, the existing daily attendance records should be recalculated.
When Should You Recalculate Attendance?
Recalculate daily attendance whenever attendance calculations may have been affected by changes to the school's attendance configuration.
Common situations include:
-
The Full Day Minutes setting has been updated.
-
The Half Day Minutes setting has been modified.
-
The duration of one or more class periods has changed.
-
New periods have been added to the school schedule.
-
Existing periods have been removed.
-
Student schedules have been updated.
-
Attendance records have been corrected after they were originally submitted.
Recalculating attendance ensures that all students' daily attendance accurately reflects the updated attendance rules.
Example Scenario
A school originally configured:
-
Full Day Minutes: 300
-
Half Day Minutes: 180
Later, the administration updates the Full Day requirement to 330 minutes after adjusting the instructional schedule.
Although period attendance remains unchanged, previously calculated daily attendance may now be incorrect because the attendance thresholds have changed.
Running the Recalculate Daily Attendance process updates all affected attendance records based on the new configuration.

What Happens During Recalculation?
During the recalculation process, openSIS:
-
Reviews attendance recorded for each scheduled class period.
-
Calculates the total instructional minutes attended.
-
Applies the current Full Day and Half Day minute thresholds.
-
Determines the appropriate daily attendance status.
-
Updates daily attendance records where necessary.
This process helps maintain accurate attendance records after configuration changes.
Important Considerations
-
Recalculation affects attendance only for the selected date range.
-
Period attendance entered by teachers is not modified.
-
The system recalculates the daily attendance derived from existing period attendance.
-
Administrators should verify attendance configuration changes before initiating the recalculation process.
Best Practices
-
Recalculate attendance immediately after changing Full Day or Half Day minute requirements.
-
Perform recalculation after modifying period durations or schedules.
-
Verify attendance settings before recalculating large date ranges.
-
Run recalculation during non-peak hours if updating a large volume of attendance records.
-
Review attendance reports after recalculation to confirm the expected results.
