Custom Behavior Fields in openSIS allow administrators to capture school-specific behavior information that is not covered by default fields. These fields help schools document additional details required by internal policies or reporting needs.
This article explains how to create a new custom behavior field step by step.
Only Administrators can add custom behavior fields
Teachers and staff can use these fields when recording incidents but cannot create or modify them
Follow the steps below to create a new custom behavior field:
Log in to openSIS as an Administrator
Go to Settings
Navigate to Behavior
Click Behavior Fields
At the bottom of the Fields list, click + Add New Field
In the Add Custom Field window, provide the following details:
Enter a clear and descriptive name for the field
Example: Parent Contact Notes, Counselor Remarks
Determines where the field appears on the behavior incident form
Lower numbers appear first
Choose the appropriate data type:
Long Text – For detailed descriptions or notes
Date – For follow-up or action dates
Dropdown – For predefined response options
Click Submit
The new custom field will immediately appear in the Behavior Fields list
It will now be available when recording new behavior incidents
Custom fields apply to new behavior records
Existing records are not automatically updated
Choose data types carefully to ensure consistent data entry
Use clear and meaningful field names
Avoid creating duplicate fields
Prefer dropdowns for standardized responses
Keep sort order logical for easy form completion
