How to Set Default Language for System Notifications in openSIS

How to Set Default Language for System Notifications

Overview

openSIS allows schools to define a default language for system notifications.
This setting controls the language used in system-generated notifications such as alerts, messages, and automated communications sent from the platform.

By configuring this setting, schools can ensure that notifications are delivered in a language that best suits their users.

Who Can Configure This?

  • School Administrators

  • Users with access to Settings → School Settings

Info
Settings → School Settings → Default Language for System Notifications

  2. Select School Settings.

Available Language Options

Depending on your system configuration, available options may include:

  • English

  • Spanish

  • French

(The list may expand as additional languages are enabled in openSIS.)

What Does This Setting Affect?

  • System-generated notifications

  • Automated alerts and messages

  • Default language for notification content

Important

This setting does not change:
  1. User interface language
  2. Individual user language preferences
  3. Manually written message content

How This Works with User Preferences

  • If a user has a specific language preference, it may override this default.

  • If no user-specific language is set, the system default language is used.

This ensures a consistent fallback language across the school.

Best Practice Recommendation

  • Choose the language most commonly used by:

    • Parents

    • Students

    • Staff

  • For multilingual institutions, ensure user-level language preferences are also configured where applicable.
