How to Enable ECTS in openSIS

How to Enable ECTS in openSIS

The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is an academic credit framework primarily used by European institutions to measure student workload and academic progress.

Since ECTS is not followed globally, openSIS provides it as an optional grading configuration. Schools that follow the ECTS framework can enable it explicitly using Grading Preferences, while other institutions can continue using the standard credit-based system without any impact.

This article explains how to enable or disable ECTS in openSIS and how it affects the system.

To access the ECTS setting:

Settings → Grades → Grading Preferences

Grading Preference: Enable ECTS

Under Grading Preferences, you will find the toggle:

Enable ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System)

This switch controls whether ECTS-related fields and calculations are available in your system.

Behavior of the ECTS Toggle

When ECTS is Disabled (Default)

  • All ECTS-related fields and columns remain hidden.

  • The system works as a standard non-ECTS grading system.

  • ECTS credits do not appear in:

    • Course Sections

    • Graduation Requirements

    • Student Progress

    • Transcripts

Alert
This setting is recommended for institutions that do not follow the ECTS framework.

When ECTS is Enabled

Once enabled, ECTS becomes active across multiple academic modules:

  • Course Sections
ECTS credit fields become available for assigning workload-based credits.

  • Graduation Requirements
Graduation rules can include ECTS-based credit thresholds.

  • Student Progress View
Accumulated ECTS credits are displayed as part of academic progress tracking.

  • Transcripts
Official transcripts include ECTS credit values, supporting European academic standards.

Info
This setting is intended for institutions that follow the ECTS system.

Important Notes

  • ECTS is not enabled by default.

  • The feature is controlled entirely at the school level.

  • Enabling or disabling ECTS dynamically updates the system UI and academic workflows.

  • Changes apply going forward and affect how credits are displayed and evaluated.

When Should You Enable ECTS?

You should enable ECTS if:

  • Your institution follows European academic standards.

  • Student workload is measured using ECTS credits.

  • You need ECTS values on transcripts and graduation evaluations.

Alert
If your institution does not use ECTS, it is recommended to keep this setting disabled.
